Silver Dollar

B17 Flying Fortress Silver Dollar began its service 20th January 1944 and following a short spell in the USA it was assigned to the UK on 2nd March 1944 where it became one of the mainstream aircraft of the 418th Bomb Squadron and flew over 100 missions with the 100th Bomb Group. On the 19th April 1945 Silver Dollar was involved in an accident with another 418th Sq. aircraft (known as ‘Heaven’s Angel’) whilst returning from a training exercise. Luckily there were no casualties. Three days later the aircraft was taken off combat duties, repaired, and used as Colonel Tom Jeffries’ personal plane.
